The New Tower Bridge Face-lift

In 2008 it was announced that the Tower Bridge in London would undergo some huge restoration work, which will take 4 years to complete and cost a massive £4million!

The reason for the high cost of this project is that all the current paintwork has to be manually stripped off from the bridge. It will then be re-painted in its traditional blue and white colours. But each of the sections will have scaffolding around it to ensure that none of the original paint will accidentally fall into the river Thames and pollute the water.

This work will not affect the beauty of the bridge and you should not be put off going to visit it, as they will only be scaffolding small sections at a time. The road over the bridge will also remain open until late 2010 when it is expected to be closed for several months.

Some of the work has already been completed, such as the walkway. A special new lighting system designed by Eleni Shiarlis has been installed. The lighting can be changed to produce different atmospheres within the bridge.

This work is scheduled to be completed in late 2012 and is expected to last for over 25 years.

If you are planning on visiting the bridge in the near future then a hire car is recommended. This allows you to take in the beautiful views of the bridge and also travel around to other nearby attractions, such as the Tower Of London and the Tate Modern, with ease.
